Social Media Marketing for Special One-Day-Only Screening of The Cold Blue

Feature-length documentary, distributed by HBO

In 1943, William Wyler, one of Hollywood’s most renowned and versatile directors, went to Europe to document the Air War in progress. Incredibly, all of the raw color footage Wyler shot for the Memphis Belle was recently discovered deep in the vaults of the National Archives, and a new film has been constructed out of the material. The Cold Blue is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and stands as a tribute to one of the world’s great filmmakers, and the men of the 8th Air Force who flew mission after suicidal mission in the Second World War.

The Cold Blue was co-produced by Vulcan Productions because co-owner, the late Paul G. Allen, had immense passion for preserving, protecting, and showcasing military history. There was no associated impact campaign with this film, however, I led the digital marketing strategy to support the one-day only “in select theaters” release in the U.S. May.

As a result of my tactical Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube marketing, over 30% of the 30,000 people who attended the one-day screening did so because they purchased tickets through digital ads that I managed. I also collaborated with HBO producers to create a social media kit, and led the digital development of the film’s 2020 Oscar campaign.
