Health Equity Storytelling

I am deeply passionate about health equity and believe all people should have the chance to live a long life in full health. I have produced and marketed a large body of work on the subject, ranging from public radio reporting, a personal radio documentary, and a two-year stint as the lead digital marketer at a population health research center. I currently support the Child Mind Institute and the personal social media brand of optimistic philanthropist in my work as a consultant for Formative, a social impact agency based in Seattle.

This is a snapshot of the health-related storytelling initiatives I’ve had the privilege of working on over the years

BOOK LAUNCH FOR NONFICTION NOVEL ABOUT PANDEMIC PREVENTION

Managed organic social media promotion strategies, authentic copywriting, social listening, and analytics reporting for the fourth book authored by a high-profile philanthropist.

DR. MURRAY'S COVID-19 PROJECTIONS BLOG

Worked 1:1 with renowned MD & PhD, Dr. Christopher Murray, Executive Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), to translate complex population health research projections into easy-to-understand narratives. Conceptualized, produced, and published video blogs that featured his expertise weekly.

HEALTH RESEARCHER SPOTLIGHT SERIES

Conceptualized and produced the Global Burden of Disease Researcher Collaborator Spotlight project, which showcases individuals within IHME’s expansive network of over 7,000 global collaborators who conduct the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and its affiliated research projects. This series of interviews gives an inside look at the people behind the research, as they discuss their current projects outside of GBD, book recommendations, and more.

GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH: SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLKIT

A big part of my experience working on digital strategy was honing the ability to synthesize myriad pieces of content and create social media kits to share with partner organizations and individuals. I would often create different versions of a toolkit depending on what type of audience they’re communicating with (the verbiage and content types that resonate with post-secondary educators, for instance, are often different than what is going to resonate with a general public audience). This is an example of a social media toolkit I put together for a general audience to promote a study published in The Lancet, “Fertility, mortality, migration, and population scenarios for 195 countries and territories from 2017 to 2100: a forecasting analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.”

THIS COFFEE TABLE BOOK IS NOT ASHAMED OF ITS 43 ABORTION STORIES

During my time as a social media producer at KUOW Public Radio, I also reported original stories. This is one of my favorites.

HOTLINES, NEWS TIP LINES FLOODED AS SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS ASK 'TO BE COUNTED'

An important story I reported on while working at KUOW Public Radio as a social media producer. My approach to collecting engagement during the Christine Blasey Ford testimony of Justice Kavanaugh’s alleged assault was highlighted by a Harvard Journalism Researcher as “innovative and exemplary.”

'FINDING FIXES' TO WASHINGTON STATE'S OPIOID CRISIS WITH BUS PASSES AND OTHER SOLUTIONS

Solutions journalism I marketed to reach Washingtonians interested in learning about ways the state is taking action on the opioid crisis.

TIE MY TUBES: A RADIO DOCUMENTARY EXPLORING ACCESS TO FULL SPECTRUM REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE

In fall 2015, I received the Pat Cranston Student Creativity Scholarship for innovation in documentary storytelling. The financial award funded an experimental radio documentary I then produced about the barriers facing women who want to undergo permanent sterilization, and expanded to cover the history of eugenics, the privatization of public hospitals, and so much more. The project is called Tie My Tubes: A Radio Documentary. It premiered in October 2016 at Hollow Earth Radio and earned coverage from NPR, Teen Vogue, and the Seattle Times.

WEST HILL’S CONCRETE MOUNTAIN: OVER THREE DECADES OF SUFFERING STILL NOT OVER FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS

This piece I reported on for the South Seattle Emerald investigated increased rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses experienced by mobile home community members who neighbored a concrete recycling company in south Seattle. For over a decade, the company operated out of compliance with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency’s regulations for thirty years.
